Review of FRO program shows signs of improvement in orphans

September 12, 2006 -- A new review of Friends of Russian Orphans's Post-Orphanage Support Program shows that orphanage graduates participating in the program have made significant progress compared to graduates who have not had similar support.

The review, prepared by V.A. Chernichkina at Demidov University in Yaroslavl, measured 24 graduates' responses in areas of sociological adaptation, self-image, self-control and quality of life. Chernichkina found that "one observes improvements in all spheres: graduates' self-esteem increased, they have become more satisfied with the quality of their lives, and more able to solve problems that arise. Their way of life has become closer to that of children from normal, full families."

Chernichkina, a doctoral candidate at Demidov University, was responsible for the portion of FRO's Five-Orphanage Community Assessment Program in 2004 which dealt with orphanage graduates who had been living independently for a year without the benefit of post-orphanage counseling.
