Musical Orphanage:
Talented children hone their skills in a former Stalin project

History

Musical Orphanage's performance auditoriumThe Kirov Region Orphanage, known as the Musical Orphanage, was built in Yaroslavl in 1949 by order of Joseph Stalin. It was built specifically for orphans with demonstrated musical talent. Originally, it occupied one two-storied building. During the 1970s, it became interregional; teachers traveled to different parts of Russia to collect musically talented orphans and bring them to Musical Orphanage. In the 1980s, 100 children lived and studied in the Musical Orphanage, necessitating the construction of an additional building to house its swelling population.

Today, the Musical Orphanage is the best appointed of the city's five orphanages; it boasts a performance auditorium, a small gymnasium and numerous vocational workshops. Music and performance continue to play an important role in orphanage life.

The children at the Musical Orphanage

A few of the boys at Musical Orphanage Although it no longer supports only the musically talented, the Musical Orphanage's population tends to include children who are more able than those at other orphanages. The children are divided into 12 groups of eight children of varying ages, and all children attend local schools.

Of its 97 children:

  • 24 are considered "delayed" in their psychological development;
  • The behavior of 32 causes them to be classified as "at risk";
  • All have ongoing health issues;
  • 24 have no parents;
  • 73 are "social" orphans.

The Musical Orphanage's staff

One director and one assistant director are in charge of the efforts at Musical Orphanage. They are assisted by 37 full-time and 45 part-time staff who are responsible for the children's musical tutelage as well as their daily needs. The Musical Orphanage is also an active member of the YARBOO Advisory Council.

FRO's work at the Musical Orphanage

Through the orphanage's participation in the YARBOO Advisory Council, children at Musical Orphanage have received art supplies, textbooks, burn medications, medical and athletic equipment, and a VCR to show drug/alcohol-prevention videos to the children.
